Fight Card Preview #1
Hello MMA Fans, I’m, John Seymour, your typical MMA maniac; and welcome to Fight Card Preview. This week for the UFC we UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Branch, Fight Night 116.
On the preliminary card we have a former UFC rising star in Uriah Hall facing off Krzysztof Jotko; whom, was recently dispatched in a close matchup against David Branch. Hall has looked flat in recent performances and may be fighting for his with Lombard on Saturday. Both men have great finishes and have looked dominant in the past, but are in serious need of a victory and career revival.
Later in the main event we have Hector Lombard vs. Anthony smith. Smith is on a 2 fight win streak looking to push Hector Lombard out of the UFC with Lombard having suffered 3 losses in a row. Lombard is the former Bellator middleweight champion but has not looked his former self late lacking that killer instinct.
We start with Luke Rockhold coming back from a loss to former middleweight Champion Michael Bisping, Rockhold looks to get back into the win column this week fighting David Branch. David Branch will be looking to extend his winning streak to 12 in a row. Branch is a relative UFC newcomer recently signing with the company after becoming the inaugural WSOF Light Heavyweight Champion in 2015 with a string of strong performances and submission finishes. This matchup however looks to favor the former UFC champ in Rockhold, due to Rockhold dominance of elite UFC talent. Look for Rockhold to open up early with a lot of strong combinations to establish a healthy distance from Branch. Don’t be surprised if Luke gets the submission finish either, he is highly skilled on the ground with dominant victories over Lyoto Machida and Chris Weidman. This will be a good learning matchup for Branch who will get to test his skills against the elite of the UFC middleweight division.
In other combat sports we have Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin. Alvarez is coming off strong victories over the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Liam Smith, Amir Kahn, and Miguel Cotto. His sole Pro Loss coming from the great (and recently much wealthier) Floyd Mayweather. Meanwhile Golovkin is an undefeated 37-0 and will be looking to defend his WBA, WBC, IBO, and IBF middleweight titles and looking to add the Ring middleweight title. This matchup will prove to be one of boxing best showcases as a premier matchup between two of the best punchers in the game. While Alvarez’s recent opponents are certainly stronger than Golovkin don’t expect this to be a mis match by any means. Look for Golovkin to establish the Jab early to maintain range and press forward looking to knockout Alvarez in the early rounds. Meanwhile Alvarez will be attempting to counter as the Power punching Golovkin moves forward. My prediction for this matchup is 10th round TKO by Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez will use his high level experience and counterpunching to wear down Golovkin and finish him in the later rounds.
